Naturalisation as a British Citizenship

If you have been granted settled status, also known as Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you can then consider naturalising as a British citizen. You will be required to have held your settled status for at least 12 months before you can apply to naturalise.

Section 6(1) British Nationality Act 1981 states you must be:-

  • Over 18
  • Sound mind (can make decisions yourself)
  • Good Character (no criminal convictions or penalties)
  • English language and Life in the UK Test
  • Indefinite Leave to Remain or settled status under EU settlement scheme granted 12 months prior
  • UK main residence
  • Not broken any Immigration Rules (overstaying)
  • 2 Referees

Once you have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) you can apply to naturalise without having to wait 12 months.
